music school
If I could tell my young self something decades ago it would be that music is something I should study, with great attention, even though I don't feel like I fit in the classical world. It would have saved me from years of frustration.
I'm trying to learn things now, no better time I suppose, but it's so immense. And I do not have time, or more clearly, money, to be a full time music student.
Any little glimpses I get from my lessons, so that I am not just playing by ear, brings me such relief.
So. If your kid has musical talent. Encourage them in this. Especially reading and tab if they are a guitarist.
I'm not saying they have to do the classical track. It's demanding and the competition is ruthless.
But a path towards studio work perhaps, or stage performance, or both. But not ignorant and winging it like I was. Really knowing their instrument and how music works.
Also get them to watch Rick Beato and Adam Neely on YouTube.
Amen.
